History:
SINCE IT'S A LOT let me summarize as best I can! Here is a link to her world info/a very detailed app just in case I forget something.
- In Baku's world, the supernatural are fueled by human belief. Once upon a time, the Gods realized that they and the rest of the supernatural world had too much power, so they put that power in the hands of humanity. This was to keep them in check, while also making sure none of them are or their creations (demi-gods, creatures, etc) had too much power.
Because of this, they have what they refer to as "stories" - a set of rules/guidelines they're forced to abide by based solely on what humanity believes about them. For example, for hundreds of years people believed ghosts haunted houses because they had unfinished business, so people who do pass on and leave behind unfinished business are bound to certain places until they figure it out. All because that's what most humans believe.
This changes depending upon culture, region, religion, and etc. But there are also loopholes in the rules that any creature can exploit to get around their limitations. The more widespread a story, the easier it is to work around.
To further protect humans and keep themselves in line, the Gods created a pseudo-government lead by the Enforcers. They're a hand-picked group of demigods and other beings chosen to keep humanity safe and their own kind in check. The one rule they're all sworn to follow is: by any means necessary. The means, of course, being left up to the Enforcers' judgements.
Enforcers are given the power to freely traverse the veil between worlds and other realms, as well as the ability to take a human form. They live undercover as humans in order to better protect them, and are comprised of only the most dedicated the Gods could find.
- Baku was created directly by the original gods; after creating animals they had leftover parts, and rather than tossing them away they put them all together to create a demi-god: a creature with a long, elephant-like nose, a mane like a lion, paws like a cat, and a thin tail. But due to the way it was created, it wasn't given a purpose, unlike other demigods, so Baku was given the option to choose what it wanted to be and do.
While searching for its purpose, it came across a young boy suffering from terrible nightmares. Disturbed by the small human's pain, Baku entered the dream realm and ate the nightmare to save the boy. Doing so left behind its impression, and the next morning the boy told his parents about what had happened, grateful for Baku's help. They began to pray to Baku for its help with their own nightmares, and from there its story spread.
But in its quest to help humans, one night it ate too much - and the human woke up an empty shell of his former self. All ambition, all hope, gone. It was an accident on Baku's part, but it terrified the humans who learned about it, and so Baku's story became two-sided - on one hand, a creature who took away nightmares and on the other, a demon who would devoured dreams until a person was completely empty. And before Baku could change how those humans saw it, the gods handed power over to humanity, and thus trapped Baku into its story with that rare, but devastating side.
- Desperate to help humans (it loved them as much as the Gods) but terrified of leaving behind another empty shell, Baku came into contact with the Spider Woman, a god from Native American lore who's responsible for the creation of the dream catcher. Sympathetic and admiring of Baku's dedication, they made a deal: the Spider Woman granted Baku the power to eat the dreams caught in her dreamcatchers, but one day Baku would have to fulfill a favor for the Spider Woman in return. Any favor, at any time, without argument. Baku accepted and since then has been able to avoid eating someone's dreams until they're empty.
- The Gods also appreciated Baku's dedication to humanity and invited it to join the Enforcers. Since then, Baku has been living in the human world under many, many different human forms, living alongside humanity while protecting them at the same time. It has refused promotion after promotion because of how much it loves the position it currently holds.
- However, because humanity holds all of this power, they've begun to change themselves. While psychics weren't unheard of, nor were seers or people sensitive to the supernatural, more and more are popping up with the advancement of technology and also, the jump in popularity of legends and stories about spooky scary things. This has weakened the veil that keeps the supernatural world separate, and has made it easier for different creatures to exploit the loopholes in their stories and escape to the human world to cause chaos.
Because of all of this, Baku has been given the mission of finding the most powerful of these humans to teach them how to harness their power, rather than letting it get out of control, and protecting them from literally everything else that would try to kill or taint them - they're basically beacons to anything supernatural, both good or bad.
There are also Enforcers who don't agree with this and think these humans should have their powers taken away or worse, and it's become a bit of a pain in the ass making sure the mission goes how it's meant to.
- On top of all of that, even with the spread of stories and legends, humanity's belief in supernatural is slowly dying out, which means - you guessed it - that the power the gods, demi-gods and etc hold is weakening. The worst it is, the weaker a creature gets - until they disappear completely. A fate that is far, far worse than death.
- Currently, Baku's mission has taken her to the north in Japan, where a haunted village has become the center of something she's still not clear of. It isn't just ghosts lurking there, but some of the most dangerous creatures to ever exploit their way into the human world.
Personality: (for sanity's sake, from here on I'll be referring to Baku as "she", since it normally takes the form of a female human)
- Baku's cover life is that of an average high school teenager named Yoshinaga Chiyoko. While pretending to be Chiyoko, Baku is quiet, shy, but friendly and polite young lady who spends most of her time studying or working. Having spent most of her life "abroad", Chiyoko tends towards being more introverted, although there are times where the few friends she has at school manage to drag her out for fun.
Since "Chiyoko" is the form/personality Baku tends to take the most often, and has over the many years she's lived in the human world, a lot of those personality traits have blended in with Baku's actual personality.
- Baku tends to be a bit withdrawn and shy, although she's far more blunt and straight to the point. She's a very no nonsense type of creature who takes her responsibilities as an Enforcer incredibly seriously. She also isn't afraid to speak her mind regardless of who it's to, and has been known to tell off the Gods because they just won't listen to her.
- Because Baku is the only one of her kind, as well as kind of being an "afterthought" to the Gods, she's a bit self-conscious when it comes to her true form. She very rarely walks around like that, much preferring her human form to anything else. Even when returning to the supernatural world, she'll stay human unless it's absolutely necessary for her to change back.
- She's definitely the loner type, preferring to work by herself. But she's also open to working with others, if she has to.
- The one trait that is the most apparent when it comes to Baku is that she always seems like she's bored of existence. She's lived a very, very long life and while she still loves humanity as much as she has since day one, well . . . up until recently, she wasn't too put out that her story was starting to fade. She tends to drawl and deadpan a lot of what she says and does, making it a little hard to tell if she's joking or not.
Many of the people who know her and have worked with her have referred to her as being cat-like in personality.
- Baku's dedication to humanity is unwavering, but she holds the same determination when it comes to her fellow creatures as well. While many would jump to extremes when handling minor problems like hauntings or mischievous spirits, Baku will instead find a different solution that works in everyone's favor. Very rarely does she ever take the extreme option.
She has a bad habit of bringing home unruly spirits to live with her and the other Enforcers who stay with her pretending to be a family, and a number of different ghosts, creatures, and entities can be found lurking around their house.
- On the other hand, if the extreme measure has to be taken, Baku doesn't hesitate. Again, her priority is and always will be humanity, and if there isn't a work around, well - sorry buddy, she's getting rid of you.
- She's resourceful! The prime example of this is the aforementioned "family" she lives with in the human world. The house they all live in is more a home base than anything, and while Baku allows all sorts of creatures to live there with them, there's a reason behind it. Whether it's to pose as a human to answer the door as a family member or as an entity to chase away nosy children exploring the supposed haunted house, each creature there has a role to play.
- She's incredibly loyal to those she's aligned with, too. If you do her a favor she will pay you back in spades, always grateful, and always willing to help. But if you wrong her . . . she is incredibly ruthless, and takes that just as seriously as she takes everything else.
This is to the point where her weapon is one of the legendary Muramasa swords; in order to use it, one must bind themselves to it with their blood, and blood is necessary to sheath it, lest the demon crafted into the sword escapes. Not only that, but she's been gifted the ability to summon Koma-inu (the lion-like statues that sit outside of Japanese shrines) and will not hesitate to call upon them.
While she believes in second chances, she also believes that if she can't see someone being able to redeem themselves, then they must be removed, and has removed a few creatures in her time as an Enforcer.
- She . . . can be a troll at times. Because she tends to drawl and deadpan a lot, she'll purposely do it in order to confuse whoever's unfortunate enough deal with her. She has a sense of humor, though, and it's never done out of maliciousness. Just mostly out of boredom.
- She also loves cute things and shopping. And emoticons.
- Did I mention she loves humans? She loves humans. They're the absolute greatest creation and she would happily lay down and die for them if they wanted her to.
- ONE LAST NOTE upon coming into Drift Fleet she's going to see whether or not she has to play Chiyoko or she can be herself. Testing the waters so to speak, since it's a different world with different rules.
Abilities:
- She can change her form, though she rarely ever changes her human appearance. And as mentioned, she rarely ever takes on her true form. If she's used too much of her powers fighting, she'll revert to her true form for a few hours at most.
- Can summon Koma-inu, but only two at a time and even then, they're not all-powerful. It puts a great deal of strain on her power and she only does it if she needs the back-up. For the purposes of playing in DF though she'll only be limited to one summon, and they won't be as big as they normally are.
- Can enter the dream realm and eat nightmares. In order to do so, however, she needs some kind of permission to do it. Whether it's a direct "Baku eat my dreams pls" or a loophole she can exploit, such as someone saying "I wish my nightmares would go away". (OOCly I'll be tossing up a permissions post)
She can also pinpoint who is suffering from nightmares, almost like a sixth sense. Just like a beacon, the worst the nightmares, the brighter and more obvious they are to her.
- She can see other supernatural creatures/true forms/etc. Though obviously with player permission!

Sat just outside of the library on the Iskaulit, Baku watches people go about their daily routines. It wasn't so much a hobby as it was a necessity, to people-watch. To watch their mannerisms, the way they spoke and the way they acted - she may have spent the last 500 years living in the human world, but there were still things she didn't understand, or things that just didn't make sense to her. Humans had a habit of being very weird at times, and it fascinated her. Humans, while weird, were so very interesting, and they were always changing. She had to change along with them. And a place like this, with people from all walks of life, different times, different worlds altogether - there was so much to learn. So much to be confused by.
But the humans here - they were so bright to her. Like pings on a radar, she could see so many that had terrible, horrible dreams at night. She was certain of the number of people here, but to have so many in one place - she had to wonder if what she had heard and read about Drift Fleet had been exaggerated or understated. And just what sort of worlds they came from, that had so many people gaining her attention.
Drawing her knees up, Baku takes out the communicator she was given on arrival and starts typing up a broadcast. She was a curious creature by nature, and she had never been one to dance around a subject.
And a girl had to eat, after all.
With a quiet hum, she sends out the broadcast and settles back to wait. She'd exploit her loopholes later; for now, she wanted to do this the right way.
Hey. Hey, Drift Fleet.
Tell me aaaa~ll about your dreams. (ノ^∇^)ノ゚
